It is a container usually used for holding gases ( gas tank ) and
sometimes liquids. This term can be used for reservoir also. They
operate under very little pressure. They are available in various
shapes most oftenly they are cylindrical in shape. They are
perpendicular to the ground with flat bottom and a fixed roof is there.
Depending on the nature of the fluid contained in the storage tanks ,
various environmental regulation are applied to the design and operation
of them. Large storage tanks tend to be in cylindrical in shape or rounded corners so that they can withstand hydraulic pressure of contained liquid. Tanker is a large storage tank which is mounted on a lorry trailer. They are insulated and double walled to ensure safety. Their capacities ranges from approximately hundreds of gallons to thousands of barrels. They are designed such that they are easily mounted in fixed locations as stationary vessels , truck chassis or on railroad car for easy transportation.
Basic categories of Storage Tanks
There are two basic categories of storage tanks for gases and liquids.
Aboveground storage tanks (AST) and Underground storage tanks (UST)- Both of them differ in the way of regulations applied on both of them.
Types of Storage Tank
These are mostly above ground storage tanks and they are :
- High Pressure Storage Tanks : These are
designed and used to withstand immense pressure exerted by the
content. They can be called as cylinders.
- Mobile "Storage" Tanks : They are
specially designed to deal with heavy sloshing load or the risk of
collision . They are sometimes used as LNG carriers. They are mostly
used as highway traveling tankers.
- Insulated CO2 Storage Tanks : They are
designed for bulk storage of CO2 gas. They are fabricated under
internationally approved inspection agencies. They are designed in
such a way that they prevent even the smallest loss of gas by
evaporation.
- Transportable Storage Tanker : They are made to BS-5500. They are vacuum insulated and they are suitable for transportation by road, ship or rail.
- They are safe for bulk storage of gases.
- They are designed in such a way that even if the smallest loss
of gas by evaporation is there then that loss is prevented .
- They are fabricated under internationally approved inspection
agencies.
- They are available in various shapes and in different
capacities.
- The pressure inside the tank is kept normal and safety relief
valves are there to protect the tanks.
- They are easy to install.
- They never rust because they are made of corrosion-resistant materials which eliminates the possibility of leakage due to either internal or external rusting.
