Guide
Each person being employed for work in connection with air separation plants should be cautioned concerning the hazards involved and precautions to be observed.
Safety Precautions
- Wash all the oxygen fittings, valves and parts with clean Tricolr
ethylene or carbon tetra chloride before installation.
- Do not permit the release of acetylene or other flammable gases
in the vicinity of plant air intake.
- Do not lubricate oxygen valves, regulators, gauges or fittings
with oil or any other substance.
- Do not fasten electric conduits to plant or its pipelenes.
- When discharging liquid oxygen or rich liquid from drains,
valves or pipe lines, open valves slowly to avoid the possibility of
being splashed.
- Do not breathe cold oxygen vapor.
- Do not pour liquid oxygen by putting solids or liquids into it
for the purpose of watching the effect of cold liquid.
- Spillage of liquid oxygen must be avoided especially in the
vicinity of lubricated machinery, asphalt paving, concrete surface
containing bitumen joints or where the liquid oxygen can flow into
drains or sewers.
- Gas cylinders should be stored under cover and should not be
subjected to extreme temperature.
- All components which come into direct contact with chemicals
must be chemical and sunlight resistant and capable of withstanding
the maximum pressure expected
- Along with pressure a Boiler at 0.7 Kg/cm2g may also be more
destructive in the event of an explosion than a small container at
220 kgs/cm2 owing to the greater mass of metal involved.
- Fluid at high pressure and moving at a high velocity are also
dangerous. A face shield or safety googles are said to prevent
injury during the operation of these plants.
- Cold box temperature must be checked atleast once a week for checking local frost spots and the level of liquid.
